Globe Barometer Glass

Globe Barometer Glass

It will predict barometric weather changes by observing the rise and fall of liquid in the storm glass. All you have to do is to add colored distilled water and it is ready to go. The instructions are included. You can use it free standing on it's own, or you can also work it into a project with a wood base and so on but not required. Reading The Instrument: Variations in barometric pressure are immediately indicated by the level of water in the spout. A low water level in the spout suggests "high pressure", representing fair weather. A high water level in the spout suggests "low pressure" and forecasts poor weather conditions. In cases of severe weather (or major storms), the water may even run out of the spout. How it works: There is "weight" associated with the high and low-pressure systems which bring about changes in the weather. When the storm glass is filled with water, air pressure in the main chamber is trapped and held constant. Any changes in the atmospheric pressure are visible by the rising or falling level of water in the spout. While the storm glass will not indicate exact barometric pressure in numerical values, it is still regarded as an accurate monitor of air pressure changes. Such changes can be visible on a smaller scale, as the instrument is sensitive enough to measure pressure changes between the attic and basement of a three-story house.

glasses & journal

glasses & journal

i've been keeping a journal, with only a couple of breaks, since I was 13 (january 1980) -- just started volume #35 yesterday, quite a pileup of scribblings over 28 years now.

i started because my sister had a diary & I thought it was cool, so i wanted one too -- those early ones are pretty hilarious to read, lots of days when I would actually take the time to write, "nothing happened" or "totally boring" -- the teen ennui is just dripping off the pages. but somehow i stuck with it, it became a habit, and now it's a solid part of who I am -- I need to write, to make little drawings, to paste in tiny prints of photos i've taken... and the books form a memory crutch of sorts, a real core of my sense of self.

but i made an unfortunate discovery last night -- a few of my books were sitting on a shelf on the boat that had a very small leak of rainwater behind it -- the books are all a bit damp (even a bit mildewy, although thankfully only on the outside & it cleaned up easily), but in one, the ink on the bottom fifth or so of most pages has dissolved -- just washed away.

i've taken the books to my office at school to dry out, & ordered a dehumidifier for the boat -- and realize I need to re-think how I store some of my stuff here.

but in an odd way, it feels ok -- I realize a lot of why i keep a journal is simply for the act of writing stuff down, rather than necessarily going back and re-reading it later? I'd hate to lose a whole book, or all of them, but somehow i think i can deal with this funny gap in my story (from 2001, not necessarily the best year in my life anyway), will just have to try harder to remember the bits that washed away...

Yes... they need to be cleaned... I can see that now!

RAW shot straight out of the camera (apart from the slight vignette added in photoshop). It took everything I am to stop myself from turning this into sepia ;-)

I had a new set of books for Christmas. I must go around with my eyes shut though (either that, or my glasses need a good clean!), because I have never heard of Edward Cullen or the books about him. Anyway.... I started reading the first in the series, and I can't put it down! I'm just over halfway through and have barely done anything else today but read!

So, having done this most of today, I thought it apt to take a photograph of what has taken up my time.

This is shot on my bedside table and yes... that's a photograph of me in the background, pregnant on my youngest - taken 20months ago now - how time has flown! Also seated behind the book, although you can see him in his entirety, is Tommy - he is one of my prized Deans Bears, bought for me by my husband some years ago.
